Another Side of the Journey

My books tell different parts of the same journey: a life shaped by curiosity, a desire for freedom, and the determination to follow my dreams.

I, Tarzan follows the first twenty-six years, when those dreams took shape. Dancing with Death takes you by sea kayak from Baja California to Panama, living from the sea and meeting indigenous communities. In 2019, it won four international book awards. Two Wheels and a Will, written as Colin Hunter, follows five ultra-distance cyclists in my native Pyrenees.

My new book explores another part of that life: the decisions about money that accompanied the adventures, the mistakes I made, and the investments that would one day make work optional.

At twenty-two, I earned $19,000 a year at Microsoft. Years later, the dot-com crash took most of my savings while I paddled through Central America. I invested from seven countries across thirty years, through market crashes and changes of home.

Living in different countries showed me how much the place you choose shapes the life your money supports. Taxes, climate, food, people, and access to the sea all became part of choosing where to call home. Decades of investing built my capital. Choosing a better home with no tax on my investment gains helped turn it into freedom from work.

I wanted time to travel, swim, meet people, and write, alongside the security to keep doing so as I grew older. This book follows the choices, setbacks, and discoveries that brought those ambitions together. It is a personal journey into investing and life abroad, with lessons for anyone who wants more freedom to choose how to live.
